A 21-year-old man was remanded to prison yesterday after being accused of murdering a man and attempting to kill another earlier this month.

Vanton Sturrup appeared before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt charged with murder and attempted murder for actions he allegedly committed on December 2.

Police allege that Sturrup, while being concerned with another, intentionally and unlawfully caused the death of Luckson Veus on December 2.

He is further accused of trying to kill Nelson Miller the same day.

According to police reports, on the day in question, a man was shot several times on Second Street, Coconut Grove. Police said they were alerted to the incident shortly around 12:20 pm.

The victim was then taken to hospital by a private vehicle. Police later checked his condition and were informed that he had died from his injuries.

During yesterday’s hearing, Sturrup was not required to enter a plea to the charges.

However, when given the chance to speak, the accused maintained his innocence, insisting that he was at work when the incident took place.

He also told the court that his mother had his work schedule to verify this and even sought to hand the document over to police early yesterday morning.

In response, Magistrate Ferguson-Pratt said she took note of the accused’s notice of an alibi and asked the prosecutor to do the same.

The case was adjourned to February 17 for a service of a voluntary bill of indictment. Sturrup was remanded to prison in the interim.

He has the right to apply to Supreme Court for bail.
