THE development of women’s golf is making headway led by the Flamingos Women’s Golf Club 242.

The club hosted its inaugural 18-Hole Scramble Golf Tournament sponsored by Consolidated Water Company Limited at the picturesque Royal Blue Golf Course at Baha Mar.

The Theme ‘I Wanna Golf with Somebody’ attracted the interest of 15 advanced and novice women players and also three skillful junior girl golfers.

The tournament was supported by an equal number of men partnering to create competitive twosome teams as well as an enthusiastic field of 36 players.

Except for the intrusion of darkness which forced some teams to pick-up after 16 holes, by all accounts, the event was hailed “A Success – A Phenomenon in the Making”.

Alena Hutchinson, the club’s lead instructor and tournament director, coordinated the event.

A special thanks goes out to the Royal Blue Golf Course at Baha Mar golf team, notably head professional, Georgette Rolle, as well as food and beverage manager, Raul Uriz, who ensured that all golfers enjoyed the experience.

The event was also supported by the BGF Ladies’ Division chairperson Dr Patti Symonette and current Bahamas Golf Federation president, Lynford Miller.

Miller expressed his pleasure in playing and would ultimately win the event partnered with Christine Russell with a score of 58 net. “Women do play golf and they’re on the rise,” Miller said.

The Flamingos Women’s Golf Club 242 continues to stay true to its pledge of providing necessary support to grow and develop future and current women golfers.

“The tournament was very well organised and accommodated all levels of play,” said Antoinette Russell, one of the FWGC 242 club members.

“Everyone felt like a champion in their own right and the camaraderie was just down right awesome,” she added.

According to the FWGC, all skill levels are now looking forward to the next 18-hole experience to be presented by The Flamingos Women’s Golf Club 242.

The FWGC thanked the following companies and individuals for their continued support - Mr Craig Flowers, Pirate Republic Brewery, Cotton Tree Convenience Store and Consolidated Water Co. Ltd, who sponsored the event in honour and memory of Sir William Allen, a keen golfer during his life.
