HARBOUR Island native Joshua Higgins is representing the Bahamas this week in one of the most prestigious events on the world sailing calendar in Oman.

Higgins, 20, is one of 433 of the world’s best young sailors from 56 nations taking to the waters of Mussanah for the 2021 Youth Sailing World Championships.

Five days of racing (from December 13-17) feature sailors in separate male, female and mixed competitions.

The winners will be named Youth Sailing World Champion in windsurfing, one person dinghy, two person dinghy, skiff, two persons multi-hull and kiteboarding classes.

Higgins will be sailing Laser Radial. He spent a number of weeks training hard ahead of the event.

Higgins is one of just 23 competitors invited from the “Emerging Nations Programme” which is designed to coach, support and assist in closing the gap in performance sailing in worldwide competition.

Higgins also competed earlier this year in the Under-21 ILCA World Championships in Gdynia, Poland, the Laser Radial Youth Worlds in Lake Garda, Italy and the US Laser Nationals in Norfolk, Virginia.

His long-term goal is to represent The Bahamas at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

The Bahamas Sailing Association congratulates this young man’s commitment and dedication and on an incredible year of world-class international sailing.
