A 36-year-old man who admitted to stealing over $60 worth of supplies from a local grocery and retail store was yesterday remanded into custody pending sentencing.

Tarrence Adderley was charged before Magistrate Kendra Kelly yesterday with stealing after officers caught him with three packs of unpaid for Airwick mixed essential oils while he was leaving Cost Right on December 17.

The items were valued at $67.15.

The court was told on the date in question, officers received information that Adderley was found with stolen items while at Cost Right on Baillou Hill Road.

Prosecutor Sgt Vernon Pyfrom said the items were found by security officers after they conducted a search of Adderley, who was trying to leave the establishment.

Police were called and the accused was subsequently arrested and taken to the nearest police station, where he admitted to the offence.

During yesterday’s hearing, the 36-year-old pleaded guilty to stealing from a shop.

However, his sentencing was deferred after Sgt Pyfrom told the court he needed to verify the accused’s identity.

He told the magistrate he recognised the defendant’s face and believed him to be “Sunny Brown” from Greencastle, Eleuthera, who he said he knew personally and had previous antecedents.

When asked by the magistrate if he knew Sgt Pyfrom, the accused said he didn’t. He also said his real name was Tarrence Adderley.

However, Sgt Pyfrom said he wanted to have the defendant fingerprinted to verify his claim.

He also told the court that based on his knowledge, he knew the defendant was a substance abuser, saying he believed this was the reason why he allegedly gave police the wrong name.

However, when asked if he smoked cocaine, Adderley told the magistrate he did not and said he only smoked cigarettes and marijuana.

As a result, Magistrate Kelly deferred sentencing to 10am today.
