Use of an offensive word on air

EDITOR, The Tribune.

I wonder if the constant use of the word “negroes” by Rodney Moncur (host) on his show televised on Island Luck TV, Channel 224 is offensive in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of URCA or other communication legislation.

It seems repugnant to one’s common sense as to why anyone would constantly refer to a person as a negro or negroes whose race is representative of a community where the majority of its people are black. It seems so regressive, oppressive, and offensive to keep referring to our Bahamian people as, for example, “the negro writer “the negro policeman, the negro healthcare professional or the negro teacher”, etc.

As I recall history, using the term “negro” is derogatory and painfully reminiscent of the slave trade. Later that same reference ‘spawned’ into the term of ‘coloured people’ and now African-Americans (black people who reside in the USA).

I thought it most interesting that the police, in their reporting of deceased person (s) found, is now referring to those person (s) as “a negro man” or negroes. This must the most asinine reference anyone with an iota of sense could use since the majority of people in the country are black. The logical inference is that if a person is found as reported he is a black person — it should only be where a person whose race does not reflect the majority of people people — then that person’s race would be described, for example, a white person or caucasian.

Despite this regular offensive and oppressive term being used on a daily basis, the Fifth Estate/Journalism appears to give the host awards for his role in journalism which could be regarded as denigrating the role played by some of its finest journalists in this country.

The word Negro is not offensive. Most are offended by the word nigger,

Nevertheless, I live by the words of Solomon " I am BLACK but comely:" good looking from the top of my head to the sole of my feet. and the words of scripture that says I am wonderfully made.

These truths no one can take away.
