A SAN SALVADOR man who broke into a woman’s residence to steal nearly $1,500 was yesterday sentenced to a year behind bars.

Trevor Jones, 24, was arrested after he broke into Pamela Storr’s Queen’s Highway residence on February 8. He pleaded guilty to one count each of housebreaking and stealing when he appeared before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes.

The prosecution said on the day in question, Ms Storr reported that someone had broken into her home and stolen $1,470 out of her personal belongings. At the time, the woman told police she suspected that Jones was the culprit because she noticed him and his mother sitting in front of a bar next to her home. She said she knew he had a reputation for breaking into people’s homes and stealing things.

The court was told that when Ms Storr approached Jones, his mother begged her not to press charges and told her that they would pay back the stolen money. As a result of her complaint, Jones was arrested. In an interview with police at the San Salvador station, he owned up to the offences.

Yesterday, Jones’ attorney told the magistrate his client pleaded guilty at his first opportunity because he was remorseful for his actions. He also said Jones was willing to pay the complainant back over a period of time and humbly asked the court to be lenient in sentencing the accused.

In response, Magistrate Forbes said while it was admirable that Jones was willing to reimburse the complainant, it would not alleviate Ms Storr’s immediate needs in view of the current economic climate. As a result, he sentenced Jones to 12 months behind bars.
