AN ABANDONED building that burst into flames, killing the man who slept inside has led to a community effort to clean up the area.
Members of the Bain Grants Town Advancement Association (BGTAA) came together to clean up the building after the death of Antonio Francois touched community members, and a decision was made to get together and honour his life, as he had no known relatives to do so.
He died in the fire on October 3, and BGTAA members collected funds for the clean up and got together to carry it out.
It is said that Francois lived alone in the building on Meadow Street. Neighbors reportedly ran out of their houses to inspect the smell of “something burning” in the air and were greeted with heavy smoke.
The Rev CB Moss, in partnership with other members of the community, decided to take responsibility for Francois’ remains. A memorial service was held on December 29 at the Mt Olive Baptist Church.
BGTAA arranged for a demolition of the building on December 30, with volunteers showing up to assist.
