DAVANTE Carey finished the weekend with individual wins in consecutive meets for the McKendree Bearcats as they continued competition in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

The Bearcats lost a dual meet to the Lindenwood Lions on January 16 but Carey continued his stellar sophomore season thus far with three top three finishes.

Carey won the 100 yard backstroke in 49.93 seconds. He was also a member of both the second place 400 yard freestyle relay team (3:03.18) and the second place 400-yard medley relay team (3:26.06).

On Friday, January 15, McKendree lost a dual meet to University of Indianapolis, but Carey was again a top finisher in his signature event.

He finished first in the 100 yard back with a time of 51.39. He was also a member of the 200 yard medley relay team that finished first in 1:31.11.

Since October, the Bearcats have had three meets postponed due to COVID-19 protocols.

Carey comes off a freshman season where he earned Academic All-GLVC accolades.

He won silver at the GLVC Championships and earned three All-American honours at the NCAA Championships.

In Division I’s Atlantic Coast Conference, Lilly Higgs and the No.18 North Carolina Tar Heels lost to No.4 North Carolina State.

Higgs’ best finish was a third place in the 100 yard breast in 1:03.61.

She also finished fourth in the 200 yard breast in 2:18.02. And Higgs placed sixth in the 200 yard IM in 2:09.69.
