A TEENAGER who struck down a cyclist with whom he had a dispute was yesterday fined $1,000 for the reckless act and ordered to compensate the victim.

Travis Moore Jr, 18, appeared before Magistrate Samuel McKinney after he was accused of hitting another man with his red Passo vehicle on January 18.

He pleaded guilty to a single count of assault with a dangerous instrument yesterday.

The court was told the complainant was riding his bicycle in the Montrose Avenue area when Moore Jr struck him down with his car as he drove past. After he filed his complaint, the defendant was arrested. In an interview with police, he admitted the offence and said he was riding on Montrose Avenue when he saw the complainant and remembered they had issues, so he decided to knock the man down while he was riding his bicycle. The court was told that Moore Jr returned home after the attack.

The accused was represented by attorney Ian Cargill who told the magistrate his client admitted his guilt from the onset of the investigation and insisted he was remorseful for his actions.

As a result, Magistrate McKinney fined Moore Jr $1,000 or nine months in prison. He also ordered the teenager to compensate the victim $300 and warned him if he didn’t, he would be sentenced to a month behind bars.

The accused was also bound over to keep the peace for a year. If he fails to do so, he could risk spending six months on remand.
