Police officer denies charge over marijuana

A ROYAL Bahamas Police Force officer who denied being in possession of more than one ounce of marijuana was yesterday granted bail ahead of his trial.

Hugh Minnis, 27, appeared before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt charged with two counts of possession of dangerous drugs, one with intent to supply and another count of possession.

The prosecution alleged the police constable was found with three separate packages of marijuana in the amounts of an ounce, three grams and two grams on January 27.

He was arraigned with four members of his family yesterday.

Police said Taikeem Sturrup, 20, Frederick Rolle, 26, Deborah Nabbie, 61, and Antonice Lightbourne, 39, also had the ounce of marijuana in their possession with the intent to supply.

Sturrup was also charged in connection with the three grams of marijuana found in their home that day.

During the hearing, Minnis, Rolle, Nabbie and Lightbourne denied the allegations and their matter was adjourned to July 1 for trial.

Sturrup, on the other hand, pleaded guilty to both offences his case was adjourned to today for sentencing. He was remanded in custody until that time.

Meanwhile, Minnis was released on $4,500 bail while the rest of his co-defendants were granted $3,000 bail leading up to their trial.
