A man who admitted purchasing an assortment of electronics which were stolen from a woman’s home was yesterday fined $2,500.

Last year Danrico Carey was charged with housebreaking, stealing and receiving after police alleged he broke into Tamara Bowe’s Carmichael Road residence to steal $3,000 worth of devices.

He denied the allegations when he first appeared before Senior Magistrate Derence Rolle Davis and the matter was adjourned for trial.

When Ms Bowe testified, she said she discovered her residence had been invaded on December 10, 2020, when she met the door “kicked in” after arriving home after 2pm. She said in “disbelief” she went inside and checked her son’s room where she discovered his TV was missing. She said when she checked her room, she also found it dishevelled.

Ms Bowe added her flat screen television was also missing along with her Apple laptop, three wireless speakers, two fire sticks, a tablet and a 60-pound gas tank. She added that when she called the police, they took fingerprints from items in her home to assist them with their investigation.

The witness said a few weeks later, she was called to the Carmichael Road police station where an officer returned her tablet to her. She said when she went through the device’s photo gallery, she saw a photo of a man she did not recognise.

When a copy of the photo was shown to Carey in court, he claimed that he did not know the man in the photo or where the picture had come from. He also stated he never broke into the woman’s home and insisted he bought the items from another man.

After listening to his explanation, the prosecution asked Carey if he would like to change his plea. When Carey agreed, the charges were re-read to him, and he owned up to dishonestly receiving the electronics.

As a result, Magistrate Rolle Davis fined him $2,500 for the offence and ordered him to compensate the woman $3,000 for her stolen goods. He warned him if he didn’t, he would be sentenced to one year in prison.
