Encouraging the next generation of engineers

FORTY Bahamian students participated in a STEM based programme offered by Bahamas Engineering and Technology Advancement (BETA) Camp this summer in hopes of learning more about the engineering field.

This year’s virtual camp was held under the theme “Interisland Connection: Building Independent and Collaborative Island Economies.”

BETA Camp CEO and Founder, Dr Trenicka Dukes said the initiative provides students in grades seven to nine the opportunity to experience hands on education in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.

She said the ultimate goal of the annual programme is to prepare Bahamian students to be globally competitive.

“Beta camp is a two-week summer engineering programme where we focused on providing students with hands on exposure to science, technology and math, the acronym known as STEM,” Dr Dukes said.

“Emphasis on programmes like this are really important because we’re giving students 21st century learning skills like critical thinking, problem solving, team work and coding. As we know, the world around us is rapidly changing and if COVID taught us anything, it’s that we have to be flexible and adaptable and not only that, but the careers of the future are in STEM and it’s important that we prepare out youth for that.”

Cloud Carib, a technology company, said it is proud to be involved in the camp and support the initiative as a sponsor for the fourth consecutive year.

“Part of our mandate is to help create and mold the next generation of tech industry professionals and we take that responsibly and very seriously,” said Stelios Xeroudakis, CEO and Founder of Clous Carib.
