A HAITIAN man was remanded into custody over allegations he entered into a fraudulent marriage more than a decade ago in order to obtain a spousal permit.

Geno Joseph, 42, appeared before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes after he was accused of lying to an immigration officer and attempting to commit fraud by false pretences.

During the arraignment, he was also charged with making a false declaration of marriage and being in the unlawful possession of Bahamian and Haitian legal documents.

The prosecution said Joseph lied to a senior immigration officer when he was approached and questioned in Marsh Harbour, Abaco on February 6.

The accused attempted to obtain a Bahamian residential spousal permit from the Department of Immigration under false pretences in November 2019.

Joseph was also accused of unlawfully obtaining a Bahamian birth certificate, a Haitian passport and two Haitian birth certificates which bore the names of two other men on February 6.

Police said the accused also made a false declaration of marriage in 2006.

Joseph denied all of the allegations and the case was adjourned to July 1 for trial.

He returns to court tomorrow to determine the issue of bail.
