Zimbabwe and women activists

EDITOR, The Tribune.

South Africa can help Zimbabwe to stop persecuting women activists.

I am deeply depressed that Zimbabwe is celebrating achievements of women yet women activists are harassed because of their different opinions to the government. Last year three opposition activists were abducted and tortured and these issues were not highlighted on International Women’s Day.

The three women are Joana Mamombe Harare West MP, Cecilia Chimbiri youth chairman and Netsai Marova youth organising secretary. Women cannot fully celebrate any achievements when other women are suffering in a horrific state in Zimbabwe just because of their opinion and demonstration. Where are the women of the world to voice their concern to the cruel Zimbabwean government?

Even South Africa is quiet about these harassments and ill-treatments of Zimbabwean female activists. Many female activists have fled to South Africa to seek sanctuary there. It is deeply worrying that South Africa now hosts an estimated seven million Zimbabweans who fled their home country because of hardships and climate of fear. Women and men all over the world should condemn and pile pressure on the careless Zimbabwean government to stop persecuting women.
