NCAA Swimming: Student athletes turn in All-American performances, school records

BAHAMIAN student athletes turned in several All-American performances and school records at the NCAA Division II and women’s segment of the NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships.

At the Division II meet, hosted at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama, Davante Carey of the McKendree Bearcats and Lamar Taylor of the Henderson State Red Wave were featured.

Carey’s active schedule included four relays - with a pair of top three finishes on the medal podium and three individual events.

The sophomore’s 400 yard and 200 yard relay teams earned All-America honours and the Bearcats team finished fourth in the nation with just eight competitors.

In the 400 yard medley relay, Carey teamed with Henrik Dahrendorff, Gregg Lichinsky and Xander Skinner to finish second in a time of 3:09.84 seconds, a new school record. In his 100 back split, Carey posted a time of 47.36 seconds.

In the 200 yard medley relay, the quartet finished third in a time of 1:25.67.

Carey swam a split of 21.53.

In the 800 yard free relay, Carey (1:42.35 split), Skinner, Lichinsky, and Fabio Dalu placed sixth with a time of 6:33.38. In the 400 yard free relay, the same quartet placed seventh in 2:55.78. Carey split 44.20.

Individually, Carey finished at No.11 overall in the 100 yard back in a time of 47.70.

In the 50 free, he finished at No.35 overall in a time of 20.93.

Taylor and the Red Wave men finished at No.18 in the final team scores.

Taylor swam in three events and earned his All-American recognition in the 100 yard back. Taylor swam to a new school record for the second time in the meet when he finished seventh in the final in 47.29.

In the 100 yard free, Taylor finished at No.16 overall in 44.78.

He also finished No.21 overall in the 50 yard free in 20.08.

At the NCAA Women’s Division I Championships, hosted at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina, Lilly Higgs and her North Carolina Tar Heels finished at No.12 overall.

Higgs and her 200 yard medley relay team earned All-America honours with an eighth place finish in 1:36.25. Higgs split 27.22 seconds on the breaststroke leg of the relay team which also included Grace Countie, Sophie Lindner and Heidi Lowe. Higgs was also a part of the 400 yard medley relay team that finished at No.14 overall in a time off 3:32.49. She swam a split of 59.37 on the breaststroke leg.

Individually, Higgs also competed in the 100 yard breast and finished at No. 25 in 59.96. In the 200 yard breast, she was No.32 overall in a time of 2:10.32.
