Defence Force officer held after gun found

A ROYAL Bahamas Defence Force officer is in police custody after he was found with an unlicensed firearm.

According to a police report, shortly after 10pm on Saturday, officers in Grand Bahama — who were part of an island-wide special operation — received information of a suspicious man dressed in blue jeans and a dark hoodie. The man was believed to be in possession of a firearm and was seen walking in the area of a nightclub on the Mall Road, near the International Bazaar. Officers quickly responded and saw a man fitting the description.

He was stopped and searched and a black and silver Smith and Wesson 9mm firearm with 10 rounds of ammunition was found in his waist band. The suspect was later identified as an RBDF officer. He was arrested and taken into police custody.

An investigation is continuing in this matter.

This is a very serious matter. When the trained members of the state security services ignore the law so blatantly they must be subject to the most severe punishment. And obviously dismissed from the Defense Force. The country does not need trained military personnel roaming the streets with illegal firearms.
