STEVEN Adderley was one of the latest signings in the Miami Marlins’ 2021 International Signing class and received his first assignment just over a month later.

Adderley, an 18-year-old, 6’0” 160-pound outfielder, was assigned to the Marlins’ affiliate in the Dominican Summer League for the upcoming season.

The DSL is a branch of affiliated minor league baseball which is played in the Dominican Republic. The league was founded in 1985. The 2021 season will get underway on May 30. The 2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Adderley signed with the Marlins on April 5, one of four Bahamians to do so during the current International Signing Period. Others include Adari Grant (St. Louis Cardinals), Evan Sweeting (San Diego Padres) and Kristin Munroe (Los Angeles Angels).

Fernando Seguignol, director of international scouting for the Marlins, said Adderley’s skillset was something the organisation had on its radar for several years now.

“We saw his body of work on the field. He’s the kind of outfielder that we think can bring instant impact to the organisation. We’re talking about plus speed, bat speed…those are impressive, but then when you talk to him you can see his family foundation is strong, credit to his parents. These are the type of players we look at bringing,” he said. “He’s a player that was on the radar for many, many organisations. We were just fortunate to stay and stick with the process and finally get it done.”
