FIVE Harbour Island men who denied stealing a $50,000 boat from another man on the island were each granted bail yesterday before their trial.

Dudley Cleare, 29, Clearance Bowleg, 34, Benjamin Martin, 28, Zion Curry, 24, and Jermaine Grant, 20, appeared before Senior Magistrate Derence Rolle Davis after they were accused of stealing a 2008 22-foot sea hunt vessel from Andre Sands on May 2.

All of the accused denied the allegation and the case was adjourned to June 2 for trial.

In the interim, the men were each granted $6,500 bail with one guarantor.

Yesterday, Magistrate Rolle Davis also denied bail to a former inmate who was accused of stealing a woman’s car battery on May 1.

Nelson Paul denied the stealing charge during his arraignment; however, before the issue of bail could be determined, the prosecution objected to it.

The prosecution argued that Paul was before the courts once again after spending 18 months on remand for a similar offence.

His attorney, Wendawn Fraser, asserted that her client was a “good candidate for bail” because he was not likely to reoffend and was maintaining his innocence.

In response, Magistrate Davis said he considered the fact that Paul was accused of another crime less than three months after he was released from prison.

As a result, he denied the accused bail and remanded him back into custody until June 14.
