IN their continued effort to promote the track and field programme ran by former basketball player turned physical education teacher Felicia Cartwright, Andrew Tynes and his Swift Athletics Track Club returned to Andros to put on the fourth annual Fresh Creek Road Race.

The event, which got started in 2018, was held on Saturday with more than 70 competitors from five clubs and schools participating. Tynes, who organised the event along with his assistant coach Ann Thompson and Cartwright, said he was pleased with the turnout.

“We have made this an annual event, but we are still trying to get all of the schools on Andros to come out and some of the schools and clubs from New Providence to come over to the event to compete,” Tynes said.

Tynes said the goal is to make the Fresh Creek Road Race a staple on the local track and field calendar.

“It’s always good when you can go to the Family Islands and compete in events over there,” Tynes said. “Our Swift Athletics Track Club has been going since we got started and the people on Andros look forward to our participation in the event.”

Swift Athletics’ Paulino Boyer, Carlos Brown and Renardo Farrington were among the top finishers on the boys’ side, while team-mate Aari Barnett topped the girls’ side.

Among the other winners were Swift’s Khaleah Thompson, Rocelis Moxey, Savannah Brennen, Jade Clarke, Kheyondre Butler, Kristoph Smith, Tyqwon Woodside and Quinton Lewis.

The competitors got to compete in different distances based on their age categories. The under-5 boys and girls did just 700 metres while the under-9 and under-11 did 1,200m. The under-13s and under- 15ss did one mile, the under-17 covered mile and half and the under-20 and open division stretched it out over two miles.

“I feel the response for this one was nice since we had Mangrove Cay down for the first time,” Tynes said. “We didn’t get South Andros there this time because they found out about it too late to put their team together.

“We had just our Swift Athletics Track Club from Nassau participating. The 3-D Stallions were scheduled to join us, but they pulled out at the last minute. The people really showed their support for the event. If they didn’t show up at the site, they parked their cars along the route and cheered on the competitors.”
