Gibson leads Huskies to two victories

Qyemah Gibson has emerged as an offensive leader for the St. Mary’s Huskies this preseason and has set the tone for lofty expectations in the 2021 campaign.

The third year forward led the Huskies to a pair of wins over the weekend.

In a 80-70 win over the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers on October 16, Gibson finished with a team high 20 points and six rebounds in the preseason finale.

He shot 8-14 from the field, including 3-8 from three point range.

The following night, Gibson led the Huskies to a 69-61 win over the University of New Brunswick Reds.

He finished with 17 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots.

Gibson opened the preseason with 15 points and six rebounds in a 100-92 win at Acadia University. St. Mary’s went 1-2 after a 92-71 tournament opening win over Acadia. In a 93-90 win over St. FX, Gibson finished with 11 points (3-8 on three pointers) and seven rebounds.

In an 83-69 loss to the Memorial Seahawks, he followed with 16 points and seven rebounds.

Gibson helped lead the Huskies to an 11-9 record last year. In his second year with the Huskies, he started all 20 contests and played just over 31 minutes per game He led the team in scoring and was seventh in the league at 15.4 points per game. He was also eighth in rebounding at 6.5 rebounds per game.

In his first year with the programme, he averaged 5.9 points in just over 10 minutes per game as a reserve.

Gibson was named a Second Team AUS Tournament All-Star.

The 2021-22 AUS regular season is set to begin Friday, October 29. The Huskies will travel to face the Acadia Axemen.

The fall semester play will wrap up Sunday, November 28. Regular season play resumes Friday, January 7 for the winter semester. The regular season concludes Saturday, February 19.
