A 31-year-old man was remanded to prison over allegations that he had sex with a minor.

Cheguvera Moxey was arrested after he was accused of engaging in sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old girl on August 27.

Due to the nature of the offence, he was not required to enter a plea and the case was adjourned to September 27 for service of a voluntary bill of indictment.

Yesterday, he asked if he could be remanded to the Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre because he was “presently recovering from drug addiction” and “needed some form of assistance and medication” for his condition.

In response, Magistrate Shaka Serville said he would not be able to send him there because of “national health concerns”. However, he said he would make a note of Moxey’s complaint and place his name on a list to ensure he is evaluated by SRC professionals while at the prison.

In the meantime, Moxey was denied bail and remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services.

He has a right to apply to the Supreme Court for bail.
