Urban renewal donates backpacks

URBAN Renewal distributed over 500 backpacks with school supplies on Grand Bahama as many students headed back to school this week.

Tyrone McIntosh, deputy director of UR, reported that each of the five areas received 100 backpacks to distribute in the five constituencies of Pineridge, Marco City, East Grand Bahama, Central Grand Bahama, and West Grand Bahama and Bimini.

“We do this every year in the various communities on the island to ensure that students receive the resources they need for school. In each bag we have notebooks, pencils, rulers, pens, and geometry sets for the older students,” he said.

Mr McIntosh said that UR usually held a summer programme for students and supplies would be given away at the end of the event.

Due to the pandemic, the event was not held in 2020 or this year.

He said they decided to feed children for two weeks on the island in the five UR centres on Grand Bahama and one in Bimini.

“We fed 100 children each day, and so that would have been like 500 meals a day,” he added.
