A TEENAGER has claimed he was a minor at the time he was accused of having sex with an underaged girl.

The 18-year-old voiced his objection when he appeared before Senior Magistrate Carolyn Vogt Evans charged with unlawful sexual intercourse.

Prosecutors alleged the accused had sex with a 15-year-old girl sometime between June 1 and 30.

However, after the charges were read to him, the accused told the magistrate he was 17 years old in June and had not turned 18 until July 4.

After noting his complaint, Magistrate Vogt Evans transferred the matter to the juvenile court to be addressed.

The age of consent at which a person is considered legally old enough to agree to participate in sexual activity in The Bahamas is 16 years old.
