Accused ‘assaulted girlfriend and police officer’

By PAVEL BAILEY

A MAN was arraigned yesterday accused of assaulting his girlfriend and a police officer in two separate incidents.

Alvin Emmanuel, 28, stood before Senior Magistrate Carolyn Vogt Evans on multiple charges. These include assault, assaulting a police officer, deceit of a police officer, resisting arrest and two counts of damage.

On March 7 in New Providence, Emmanuel is accused of assaulting his girlfriend. It is also alleged that he intentionally damaged her rose gold iPhone 7 Plus, valued at $490.

And on March 29 at Chances Plaza on Carmichael Road, he is accused of attempting to deceive Police Corporal Aviel Bodie by claiming to be “Alvin Curry”.

When asked to present an ID after giving this false name to Corporal Bodie, Emmanuel fled the scene only to be caught after he again resisted arrest.

It was during this struggle that the accused reportedly assaulted Corporal Bodie and caused damage to the officer’s blue Samsung Galaxy A32 valued at $259.

In court, Emmanuel pleaded not guilty to all six charges against him. He also did not accept the facts that were stated in court. He denied having lied to police about his name.

He was granted bail for the matter involving his girlfriend at $3,000 with one or two sureties. He was further granted bail for the police matters for another $3,000.

As a condition of his bail he is expected to report to Carmichael Road Police Station every Sunday before 7pm.

The magistrate warned the accused that he is not to have contact with any of the witnesses or complainants in these matters while out on bail.

Emmanuel’s trial for these charges was adjourned to May 30.
