Burrows and Tigers finish 5th in U Sports Men’s Basketball Final 8

SHAMAR Burrows and the Dalhousie Tigers concluded their season with a fifth place finish overall at the U Sports Men’s Basketball Final 8.

The no.4 Tigers scored a 98-72 victory over the no.2 Victoria Vikes in the Consolation Final, yesterday afternoon at the Saville Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada to complete their tournament run at 2-1.

Burrows finished with 17 points on 8-9 shooting from the field and also added five rebounds and three assists.

The no. 4 Tigers opened the tournament with a 90-80 loss to no. 5 Queen’s Gaels and were relegated to the consolation round.

Burrows stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points (6-9 field goals), four assists, three rebounds and two steals in 23 minutes.

In the consolation semifinals, the Tigers scored a 90-77 victory over the top seeded Brock Badgers Saturday afternoon. Burrows finished with eight points and six rebounds.

“We were really disappointed Friday, we thought we could win this tournament. But credit to the team, we have a lot of seniors, and they wanted to end their season on a high note,” said Dal head coach Rick Plato.

In three Final 8 games, Burrows averaged 12.3 points, and 4.3 rebounds per game.

The Badgers, the OUA Wilson Cup winners, were the no.1 overall seed, were followed by the Vikes (Canada West champions), no. 3 Alberta Golden Bears (CW finalists and hosts), the Tigers (AUS champions), the Queen’s Gaels (OUA finalists), no. 6 McGill Redbirds (RSEQ champions), no. 7 Carleton Ravens (wildcard) and no. 8 Saskatchewan (CW bronze medallists).

In their last Final Eight appearance, The Tigers ended just short of their ultimate goal, but finished as the second ranked team in all of Canadian collegiate basketball. They finished with the silver medal at the 2020 U SPORTS Final 8 Basketball Championships, the best finish in programme history.

Dalhousie finished the season with a 17-3 overall record highlighted by the programme’s ninth Atlantic University Sport title. Burrows earned Subway Player of the Game honours in the AUS title game after he sparked the Tigers’ 84-78 win over the UPEI Panthers with 19 points and 13 rebounds, both team highs.

For the tournament, Burrows averaged 12.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game on 49 percent shooting from the field and 50 percent shooting from three point range.

On the season, Burrows was named a second team AUS All-Star. was third in scoring for Dalhousie, averaging 14.8 points per game in his 13 appearances this year, shooting 73 percent. He led the Tigers in rebounding with 6.7 per game.
