A SENIOR magistrate yesterday deferred the sentencing of a man who admitted to stealing $100 cash from a woman last month.

Isaac Roberts, 20, was charged with stealing after a woman reported to police that a man stole $100 from her purse on March 22.

Police said the woman was at work when the incident happened.

Police said while the woman was not able to see the perpetrator, surveillance footage showed a man reaching into the woman’s bag to collect her cash.

As a result, Roberts was arrested and taken into police custody, where he declined to comment on the allegations made against him.

During his hearing before Senior Magistrate Derence Rolle-Davis yesterday, Roberts owned up to the offence.

His attorney Bjorn Ferguson told the court his client had no previous convictions and was extremely remorseful for his actions.

He also went on to speak of Roberts’ character, describing him as a regular churchgoer and an aspiring videographer.

“He’s actually embarrassed that he found himself before the court for such a silly matter … there was no need to do it,” Mr Ferguson said.

He also asked the court for leniency, saying his client deserved a second chance.

When asked by the magistrate why he committed the offence, the accused said he did so because he wasn’t in the right frame of mind at the time.

He also told the court he knew that his actions were wrong and further promised not to reoffend.

When asked if the money was recovered, the attorney said despite their attempts to make amends, they were unable to. He suggested that the woman refused to accept the money.

In view of this, Magistrate Rolle adjourned the matter to April 12 after telling the court he wished to speak with the virtual complainant to assist with sentencing.
