The Bahamian connection for the Benedict College Tigers men’s volleyball team had their run in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship tournament end in the semifinals.
The Tigers suffered a three set loss to Edward Waters yesterday, 25-19, 25-19, 25-19 at the tournament in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Ras Jesse Delancy led the Tigers with 12 kills while Terran Walkin had 20 assists.
Edward Waters advanced to the championship match against Central State while Benedict concluded the season at 9-15.
Delancy, a sophomore outside hitter, recently was awarded as the SIAC’s first recipient of the men’s volleyball Player of the Year award (See story HERE).
The Tigers’ team also includes fellow Bahamian players: Walkin - a freshman setter; Donovan Wilmott - a junior middle blocker/outside hitter; Clint Forbes - a freshman libero; and Zion Beckford, a freshman outside hitter.
The Tigers began their SIAC tournament run with a with a three set win over Kentucky State in the opening match 25-8, 25-22, 25-13.
Wilmott, Delancy and Beckford all had 10 kills. Walkin had 31 assists and Forbes recorded 10 digs.
In their second match they fell to Central State 3-1. Central State took a 25-17, 22-25, 25-16, 27-25 victory.
Delancy led the Tigers with 19 kills and 10 digs.
The following day, the Tigers rebounded with wins over Morehouse and Fort Valley State.
It was a thrilling five-set victory over Fort Valley State: 20-25, 25-20, 28-26, 22-25, 15-11.
Delancy finished with a season and career-high 34 kills, while hitting .329 and adding 10 digs for a double-double. Walkin had a pair of season-high performances with 44 assists and 21 digs.
The Tigers also added a three-set sweep over Morehouse: 25-15, 25-12, 25-11. Delancy finished with 16 kills and hit .583 while Beckford had 10 kills.
