A SENIOR prison officer has denied smuggling drugs into the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services last week.

Chief prison officer Herman Major, 62, was arrested after police accused him of being in possession of five and three quarter ounces of marijuana on April 20.

Police claimed he took the contraband, which was allegedly concealed in brown taped packages, into BDCS the same day.

Officers said they discovered the drugs at the correctional facility shortly after 11am that day while acting on information.

The estimated street value of the drugs is $5,750, police said.

However, the 62-year-old denied the allegations during his hearing before Magistrate Samuel McKinney. He was subsequently granted $15,000 bail with one surety.

His next court appearance is June 8.
