Moncur issue is a distraction

EDITOR, The Tribune.

The former Senator the Hon Rodney Moncur and I go back decades as community activists and influencers. He has no known public scandal attached to his name.

He is a graduate of C C Sweeting; a businessman and a Justice of the Peace. I might add that he professes to be a stable family man.

All in all, despite his sometimes-outlandish utterances, Moncur is a good and productive Bahamian. For these reasons, I fail to understand the uproar about him being retained as an independent contractor by the Ministry of National Security.

I would suggest that that ministry simply state what the correct position is and terms thereof. This is a non-issue and yet another unnecessary distraction to the important work being done by this vital ministry.

With crime spiking, we need all hands on deck. If Moncur brings something to the table as he appears to do, at least to the powers that be, so be it.

It is not as if Moncur will have access to confidential files or information. He will be an independent contractor, whatever that means so there should be no need to speculate as to the exact work which he will be called upon to do. If he were to have been convicted of a serious crime, I would be the first one to object to placing him within Munroe’s portfolio.

Other than that, what is the big deal? Some suggest that Moncur’s selection of Munroe as a sort of co-host of his mediocre talk show (in my opinion) may have given the latter an unfair electoral advantage in the months and weeks leading up to the general elections.

Nothing short of an act of God could have derailed the PLP and Brave coming to power in 2021. Minnis and the FNM had become so ‘hated’ politically that just a small tip on the shoulder would have triggered their eventual and inglorious demise.

The credit for this lies squarely with the right-thinking members of the wider Bahamian society. Moncur should not, however, be used as a scapegoat. While asking puerile questions about Moncur perhaps Dr Minnis will tell us about the details of contracts alleged to have been awarded to persons unknown while he was the Competent Authority.

Bodie, I understand why you’re frothing at the mouth again. Despite all of your efforts and ass kissing you still don’t have a seat at the table and still snatching at crumbs. Moncur got your gold mine, you got the shaft.
