A COUPLE was fined $800 yesterday after admitting to assaulting a police officer last month and resisting arrest.

Tavarion Pratt, 35, and Shyann Pierre, 20, appeared before Assistant Chief Magistrate Subusola Swain each facing one count of assaulting a police officer, using obscene language, disorderly behaviour and resisting arrest.

The court was told the couple committed the offences on January 31 after police stopped them on the road in reference to a domestic complaint.

While being questioned by the officers Pratt started cursing and acting in a disorderly manner.

Police said Pratt also pushed one of the officers when they tried to arrest him.

While Pratt was being arrested, his girlfriend also started to act in a disorderly manner, telling officers “that’s my f—king boyfriend, he ain’t do nothing.”

She was subsequently warned by officers, but continued to behave in a disorderly manner, the court was told.

As a result, both accused were eventually detained and taken to the nearest police station, where they admitted to the offences.

When given the opportunity to speak, both Pratt and Pierre admitted they were involved in an argument before the incident happened.

However, they claimed the five bystanders misinterpreted the situation and attacked them aggressively for no reason.

Asked yesterday if she had any children, Pierre told the court she was pregnant with her first child.

It was also revealed that the couple had no previous convictions.

In response, Magistrate Swain fined the couple $300 each or two months for assaulting a police officer, another $300 or one month for resisting arrest, $100 or seven days for behaving in a disorderly manner and an additional $100 or seven days for using obscene language.

Also appearing before court on similar charges was 31-year-old Deandro Munnings.

Munnings is accused of assaulting a woman last month.

During yesterday’s hearing, he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The matter was adjourned to April 22 for trial and bail was granted at $2,000 with one surety.

In a separate offence, Charles Miller, 63, was charged with threats of harm after officers alleged that he threatened a woman with harm on January 7.

However, Miller also denied the allegations and the matter was adjourned to April 22 for trial.

Bail was also granted at $2,000 with one surety.
