THE Davis administration held a ceremony on Friday for the signing of the United Nations’ Multi-Country Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (MSDCF).
The framework supports the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and other international development plans of the individual countries in the English and Dutch-speaking Caribbean.
Prime Minister Philip “Brave” Davis noted there are 17 Sustainable Development Goals and each one will be analysed to identify the weakness in the country’s legislative regime to be able to fill those gaps to be able to achieve those goals.
“We understand too well that rising sea levels, rising temperatures, and more frequent and more severe hurricanes are not challenges that we can overcome on our own. The need for partnerships, especially global partnerships, is now greater than ever before and so we are thrilled to become a part of this regional framework,” he said.
“Occasions like this remind us that we are more alike than we are different. This ‘Multi-County Sustainable Development Corporation Framework’ reflects our determination to strengthen regional collaboration towards a common goal and it is exactly the kind of initiative envisioned by Sustainable Development Goal 17, which urges us to ‘strengthen the means of implementation and revitalise the global partnership for sustainable development.’
“My friends, our collective mandate is clear. In these extraordinary times, we must reinforce our social-protection apparatus, invest in human capital, and establish a robust economic foundation for sustainable growth,” Mr Davis said.
UN Resident Coordinator Dr Garry Conille highlighted the efforts made in resilience to climate change and shocks and sustainable natural resource management.
“Mr Prime Minister, today your government’s commitment to strengthen engagement with the international community gains new roots as you sign on to this framework with your regional colleagues,” he said.
“In fact as you have articulated in your administration’s Blueprint for Change this framework is a commitment for Sustainable Development Goals and its values to end poverty, ensure quality education and lifelong learning opportunities, guarantee gender equality and empowerment for women and girls, safeguard clean water and quality sanitation, ensure access to affordable and reliable sustainable and modern energy and to build resilient communities able to adopt to climate change.”
He also said the UN country team has been able to respond and offer support to The Bahamas in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian, in COVID-19 response and recovery, and in migration and trade.
The MSDCF is the primary roadmap for United Nations intervention and guidance by member states of the Caribbean. The instrument allows for greater strategic engagement by the UN on the instruction of participating countries.
