Probation over marijuana

By PAVEL BAILEY

A MAN, taken to court on marijuana charges yesterday, was placed on six months probation.

Anwar Woodside, 33, of Grace Avenue, appeared before Magistrate Derence Rolle Davis on charges of possessing Indian hemp.

Woodside was caught in possession of the drug after officers pulled over his heavily tinted Honda Civic near Kemp Road at around 8pm last Thursday. After officers instructed Woodside to get out of his vehicle, they noticed a suspicious paper fall out of his car and upon further search of his vehicle uncovered six grams of Indian hemp with a total value of $20.

When the accused appeared in court, he pleaded guilty to the charges, but said in his defence that he only used the drugs to cope with stress from bills and his work as a diesel mechanic. While he claimed to have total control of his habit in his statement before the court, he also accepted all his wrongdoing in this case and urged the magistrate to deliver a swift verdict.

“Whatever you want to make this happen and get done, I’ll accept it,” he said.

Magistrate Davis accepted his guilty plea and granted Woodside six months’ probation with a clean record. Woodside was, however, cautioned that if he is caught committing any other offence in that time, he would receive a $350 fine or failing to pay that, he would spend one month in prison.
