Two years in jail for firing gun and fleeing

By PAVEL BAILEY

A MAN was yesterday sentenced to two years in prison and fined $6,000 after he pleaded guilty to a firearm charge.

Frank Curtis, 43, as well as Daxton Gibson, 31, and Jermeco Knowles, 40, appeared before Magistrate Samuel McKinney yesterday in connection with a firearm incident that is reported to have taken place on Harbour Island last year.

On January 11, 2021, police responded to reports of gunshots near the Harbour Island All Age School and found the accused on a tract road near the school. When the suspects saw the police, they immediately fled the scene only for Curtis to drop the firearm during the chase. All three men were eventually caught by authorities and arrested. Both the firearm and its magazine with nine rounds of ammunition were collected at the scene with the serial number erased.

The men were later officially charged with being found in possession of a dangerous firearm and ammunition.

In court, Curtis reversed his earlier innocent plea to guilty and apologised to the court for his continued misbehaviour.

Curtis had a prior sentence of four years for an unlicensed firearm. He asked the court to be as lenient as possible in his most recent sentence.

Magistrate McKinney accepted his plea and sentenced him to two years in prison starting on January 14 and a $6,000 fine for the firearm charge. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional six months in prison.

He was also sentenced to one year in prison for the ammunition charge, to be served concurrently.

Gibson and Knowles were both discharged on all counts and released.
