A MAN was placed on 12 months conditional discharge by a Magistrate’s Court yesterday for threatening and causing harm to his former girlfriend.

Herman Kemp, 31, represented by Attorney Milton Cox, appeared before Assistant Chief Magistrate Subusola Swain on charges of threats of harm and causing harm to his ex-girlfriend, Fafon McKinney, on July 2.

He pleaded guilty to both charges.

As part of his plea of mitigation, Mr Cox pointed out that his client is gainfully employed as an electrician and is the father of four children aged 12, eight, five and three.

Mr Cox admitted his client had a previous conviction from 2019.

Kemp pleaded guilty to both current counts against him to spare the court’s time.

Mr Cox asked the court to be lenient in the sentencing, especially in view of his client’s relatively young age.

In view of this, Magistrate Swain placed Kemp on a 12-month conditional discharge. Should Kemp face any further legal matters in that time he will be ordered to serve three months in custody at the Bahamas Department of Corrections (BDCS) for both charges served concurrently.

Kemp was further ordered to compensate Ms McKinney $500 for the incident or risk a further 30-day jail sentence.
