TWO men were arraigned in a Magistrate’s Court yesterday after being accused of housebreaking and stealing more than $18K worth of personal items.

Kevin Andrews, 32, represented by Attorney Ian Cargill, and Reynaldo Johnson, 30, represented by Attorney Keevon Maynard both stood before Assistant Chief Magistrate Subusola Swain. There the pair faced charges of housebreaking, receiving and stealing.

On July 15, the defendants were accused of breaking into Hanna Beard’s residence on Sea Beach Boulevard. On that same day and place they are further accused of stealing from 101 Sea Beach Boulevard various items belonging to Maria Yallourakis.

These included various luxury bags and assorted jewellery; an Apple Laptop, phone, charger and earPods; credit cards as well as a US passport and currency. The total value of these items is estimated at $18,190.

In court, both defendants pleaded not guilty to all charges against them.

The prosecution then objected to bail in the matter on the basis that both defendants had antecedents of a similar nature and raised concerns they would commit further offences while on release.

Mr Maynard then countered this claim by arguing that despite their past history, both defendants are innocent of the charges until proven guilty. Mr Maynard also said that neither defendant has violent criminal records nor pose a flight risk during his bail application on Johnson’s behalf.

Mr Cargill added that his client would be willing to wear an ankle monitor and report into the nearest police station should Andrews be granted bail.

Magistrate Swain denied Andrew’s bail request due to the fact that he was already convicted for a similar offence.

However, Johnson was granted bail at $7,000 with one or two sureties under the condition he be fitted with an ankle monitor.

The defendants’ trial in the matter is expected to commence on October 25.
