Three face court on drugs charges

THREE WOMEN and a man were arraigned in Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on separate drug charges.

Nickeisha Russell, 30, Synovia Bethel, 37, and Sophia Hepburn, 36, all appeared before Senior Magistrate Samuel McKinney on charges of possession of dangerous drugs with intent to supply.

On June 1 in New Providence, the police stopped a suspicious, heavily tinted white Nissan Cube that had a strong scent of weed that emanated from the opened door.

A search of the car uncovered drugs under the passenger seat in a pink bag containing eight foil wraps of Indian Hemp that had a street value of $40 and weighing a total of eight grams.

After their arrest Russell admitted owning the drugs and said they were for her personal use.

As such Russell pleaded guilty to the charge while the remaining defendants pleaded not guilty.

When asked of her residential status Russell told the magistrate she is married to a Bahamian.

Magistrate McKinney then placed Russell on an 18 month probation, failing which would result in a $400 fine or two months in prison.

Both Bethel and Hepburn were discharged in the matter.

The man, Nelson Etienne, 51, also stood before Magistrate McKinney on charges of possession of dangerous drugs and damage

On May 30, Etienne is charged with being in possession of one gram of Indian hemp.

And on May 28 at the Out East Restaurant on Prince Charles Drive, the defendant was further alleged to have caused $85 worth of damages to a water pipe.

In court he pleaded guilty to the charges and took responsibility for his actions.

As such the magistrate ordered him to compensate restaurant and bound overto keep the peace for one year or risk a $500 fine or 3 months in jail.
