No evidence for electric car claim

EDITOR, The Tribune.

We write in reference to a letter published on Friday. June 10th, in which Mr Kevin Evans opines that Electric Vehicles are unsafe in wet conditions.

We are aware that Mr Evans expresses a myriad of opinions in his daily letters to the editor, and certainly we support his freedom of speech. However, he fails to back up his personal opinion with any facts, and sadly appears ignorant about EV batteries, allowing irrational fears to cloud his judgement. A Google search on “Death by EV Electrocution” returns no results that would support Mr Evans’ hypothesis.

Surely Mr Evans does not imagine, for an instant, that vehicles would pass the strict regulatory regime of any responsible country if there was a remote possibility of electrocution as described by him?

Readers may find the video at https://www.youtube.com/watch both educational and entertaining on the subject.

The facts are EV batteries are completely sealed from the elements, and built-in safety measures ensure that drivers and passengers enjoy a smooth, powerful ride without danger of electrocution. With an estimated six million EVs on the roads around the world today, you would be very hard pressed to find even one incident of death by EV electrocution in any type of weather, including torrential rain.

On the other hand, a quick Google search will reveal that about 400 people perish from fires in gas or diesel vehicles every year in the US alone, yet Mr Evans apparently sees no danger in using a vehicle powered by a highly inflammable liquid with a considerably higher risk to personal safety. Perhaps Mr Evans might favour a return to the horse and cart.

In these times where personal opinions seem to override the facts, it is essential to correct misinformation with measurable data. Regardless of propaganda spread by oil and legacy car companies resisting change and new technologies, the fact is that electric vehicles are safe, cleaner, more efficient and economical than gas cars, and they offer a more sustainable solution to our transportation needs in the 21st century.

The EV revolution is on the move around the world. We applaud our Government for getting on board, and empowering Bahamians to dump the pump.
