A 22-year-old man accused of shooting a couple who had been riding on a motorcycle earlier this year was yesterday charged with murder and attempted murder.

Jefferson Bevans was charged before Senior Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans with the January 27 murder of Keith Sweeting and attempted murder of Kenniqua Taylor.

Police said the shooting occurred on McQuay Street around 7pm that day.

According to initial police reports, a man and woman were riding on a motorcycle travelling west on McQuay Street when two men emerged from a bushy area and fired shots in their direction, hitting them.

Police said the man died at the scene from his injuries, while the woman was taken to hospital for medical attention.

The deceased was later identified as Sweeting, a father of two.

The female victim in the incident was said to be his girlfriend and child’s mother.

Yesterday, Bevans was not required to enter a plea to the charges.

He was subsequently remanded to prison and is expected to return to court on May 30 for the presentation of a voluntary bill of indictment.

He has a right to apply to the Supreme Court for bail.
