A 29-YEAR-OLD man who slapped his child’s mother during a heated argument last month was charged in Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Police said William Charlow assaulted the woman while she was visiting her father’s residence to collect their son on February 28.

The woman told officers Charlow approached her and started asking her questions. During the conversation, the woman said the accused became angry and slapped her in the face.

Police action was requested and Charlow was later arrested. During his interview with police, he admitted the offence.

Charlow told the court he was sorry for his actions. He said the incident happened after he started questioning his child’s mother about her whereabouts after being out with friends that day.

The accused said she became annoyed at his line of questioning and started punching him.

“She got upset by my questioning and she punched me and my natural reflex was to hit her in the face,” he said, adding the two were drinking that day.

Charlow said the next day, he reported the incident to the police, but claimed that only he was arrested in connection with the matter. “I ask the court for leniency,” he said.

In response, Senior Magistrate Derence Rolle- Davis warned him to be of good behaviour.

Also appearing before court on similar charges yesterday was Johnathan Armbrister, 44.

Ambrister is accused of assaulting Ercharae Ferguson on March 3.

The 44-year-old denied the allegations and the matter was adjourned to June 15 for trial. He was granted bail at $500 with one surety.

In a separate case, Dameko Johnson, 26, and Travis Taylor, 26 were charged with assaulting a man with a blue Honda Civic on March 6. The two are also accused of threatening to kill the man and robbing him of $150 cash.

During their hearing yesterday, the accused pleaded not guilty to charges of threats of death and robbery. Taylor also denied one count of assault with a deadly instrument, however Johnson pleaded guilty to the offence.

Magistrate Rolle-Davis adjourned the matter to June 13 for trial and also set bail for both accused at $5,500 with one surety.
