WHILE the Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association’s boys Junior Davis Cup and the girls Jr Billie Jean King Cup teams had mixed results yesterday, they both kept their hopes alive in the playoffs in the week-long tournament in Santo Domingo.

The Bahamas boys prevailed with a 3-0 sweep over Jamaica in their Jr Davis Cup playoffs as William McCartney won 6-3, 6-2. Michael Major Jr also was successful in a 6-3, 6-2 decision. And in doubles play, McCartney and Jackson Mactaggart teamed up for a 6-3, 6-1 victory.

The boys are now set to play Puerto Rico for fifth or sixth place in their final playoff match today.

In the Billie Jean King action for girls, the Bahamas played a make up from earlier in the week due to the rain.

In that match, the Bahamas team of Jalisa Clarke and Breann Ferguson lost 6-1, 6-4 in the doubles to complete their 3-0 loss.

Despite their loss, the girls will play for eighth, ninth or tenth place in the tournament today.

The team lost 3-0 to Trinidad & Tobago in their previous match played on Wednesday. In that match, Breann Ferguson lost 4-0, 4-0, while Sierra Rodgers fell 4-0, 4-1. Ferguson and Clarke teamed up in doubles, only to lose 5-4, 4-1.

The boys’ team is being coached by Gregory Greene, while Sharon Greene is the coach of the girls’ team.

The trip came on the heels of the Bahamas’ performance in the 2022 North Central Americas & Caribbean Pre-Qualifying Tournament for the World Junior Championships in El Salvador the week before. The boys’ team, coached by Bradley Bain, consisted of Jerald Carroll, William McCartney and Jackson Mactaggart. They finished as runners-up, but fell short of advancing to the World Group as only the winners moved on. The girls’ team, coached by Paula Whitfield, consisted of Rachel Thompson, Sarai Clarke and BreAnn Ferguson. The team, however, got eliminated when they lost to El Salvador in the playoffs after being the only Caribbean country to get a spot in the playoffs.
