Albury, Elisee advance in NJCAA tourney

A PAIR of Bahamians are through to the next round of the NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Deyton Albury and his no.5 ranked Chipola College defeated no.12 Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons yesterday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Albury finished with four points and two rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench.

They will advance to play no.13 Harcum in the quarterfinals at 7pm tonight.

This year marks Chipola’s 17th appearance in the national tournament.

Chipola advanced to the tournament with a 73-64 win over Indian River State College to win the FCSAA State Title and earn an automatic bid.

Deangelo Elisee and his no.11 ranked Triton Trojans defeated Garreth Edgecombe and the no.22 Caldwell Community College Tech Cobras 88-62 in the opening round.

Elisee finished with eight points, six rebounds and two assists. Triton advanced to face no. 6 Indian River State in the second round.

The Trojans finished the season at 27-5 and secured one of eight at large bids in the field. In 32 games this season with 18 starts, Elisee - the 6’9” freshman forward - averaged a team-leading 3.3 blocks, 9.6 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.

The Cobras defeated USC-Salkehatchie 68-66 in the Division 1 Region 10/Atlantic District Tournament Championship to earn an automatic bid to the tournament.

Twenty-four teams entered the tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas, which runs through March 19.
