Man accused of abusing girl, 5

By PAVEL BAILEY

A MAN was charged in a Magistrate’s Court yesterday with abusing a five-year-old girl.

Renado Dorsett, 32, represented by attorney Barry Sawyer, stood before Magistrate Kendra Kelly on a charge of cruelty to children.

Sometime between March 13 and 18 in New Providence, Dorsett is accused of physically abusing the girl, who is not related to Mr Dorsett. It was reported that after this incident the child was treated and discharged from a medical facility.

In court, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Prosecutor Inspector Pyfrom informed the court Dorsett had antecedents, but none of a similar nature, with one currently unknown conviction from 2019.

The prosecutor asked for a bail deferral so that the court would have time to properly research the accused’s criminal record.

Mr Sawyer then argued that the matter is not worth his client remaining in custody or being denied bail, as he indicated there were conflicting reports in the matter.

Dorsett’s attorney said the child is predominantly in the custody of her biological father.

After his lawyer’s appeal, Dorsett further begged the court to be granted bail. As he stated that he wanted to return home to provide for his girlfriend who is experiencing difficulties in the last trimester of her pregnancy.

Dorsett told the court the currently does not reside with him, and that he personally took the girl to the Criminal Investigations Department after the alleged incident.

When asked directly by the magistrate about his previous conviction, the accused claimed the only run-in with authorities he can recall is for breaking curfew in 2020.

In view of the accused’s pleas for bail, Magistrate Kelly adjourned his bail hearing to today.
