Bail granted for man accused of cruelty to five-year-old girl

By PAVEL BAILEY

A MAN was granted bail in a Magistrate’s Court yesterday after being accused of abusing a five-year-old girl.

Renado Dorsett, 32, represented by attorney Barry Sawyer, stood before Magistrate Kendra Kelly as bail determination was made for his charge of cruelty to children.

Sometime between March 13 and 18 in New Providence, Dorsett is accused of physically abusing the girl, who is not related to him.

After the prosecution requested a deferral on Tuesday to determine if the accused had a prior record, they confirmed Dorsett’s claim that his only previous conviction was for a COVID curfew breach in 2020.

For that offence, Dorsett was placed on a one-year probation or risk a fine of $300.

As the accused had no other matters outstanding and the court had verified that the child was residing with her father, the prosecution had no objections to bail.

The magistrate set Dorsett’s bail at $8,000 with one or two sureties on condition that he sign in at the Grove Police Station every Monday before 6pm.

Before being released from custody so that he could return to his pregnant girlfriend, Dorsett was warned not to have any contact with any of the witnesses or complainants in this matter.

Failing to do so or breaching any of the other conditions of his bail will result in it being revoked and his immediate return to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services.

Dorsett’s trial is set for July 8.
