Bail granted in $52k marijuana case

By PAVEL BAILEY

A MAN was granted bail at nearly $10k in a Magistrate’s Court yesterday after allegedly being found with $52,800 worth of marijuana last week.

Troy Bethel, 48, of #7 Ninth Terrace, appeared before Senior Magistrate Samuel McKinney on a charge of possession of dangerous drugs with intent to supply.

According to an official police statement on May 19 at around 1:30pm officers from the Drug Enforcement Unit acting on information searched the accused's residence. There officers, armed with a search warrant, discovered a white crocus sack filled with a grassy substance suspected to be drugs.

The sack’s contents were later positively identified as 52lbs and 8oz worth of Indian Hemp with an estimated street value of $52,800. These drugs were then seized by the police and Bethel was arrested for having them in his home.

In court the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge against him.

As there was no objection to bail Bethel was granted $9,500 bail with one or two sureties. Under the conditions of his bail he is expected to be fitted with an ankle monitor.

Bethel’s trial is set for August 2.
