Lewis homers, Fernander returns to Double A

MIAMI Marlins prospect Ian Lewis continues his momentum from his hot start to the season in Single A while Detroit Tigers prospect Chavez Fernander made a return to Double A.

Lewis, the no.12 prospect in the Marlins organisation, hit his first home-run with the Jupiter Hammerheads in a 6-4 loss Sunday night.

In 15 games, the 19-year-old infielder is hitting .375 in 15 games for the Hammerheads.

Lewis got off to a blistering start at the plate in his 2022 season and opened the year with a seven-game hit streak in his Single A debut.

On the season he has three doubles, 10 RBI, eight runs scored and one stolen base, slugging .650 with a .565 OBP.

After starting the minor-league season in extended spring, Lewis made his Hammerheads debut and went 2-5 with an RBI, stolen base and a run scored against the Bradenton Marauders.

He was named the Florida Complex League MVP when the Marlins named their Minor League Award winners for the 2021 season.

In his first season of professional baseball, he played 43 games, predominantly at second base in the FCL. He hit .302, with a .354 OBP, slugging .497 and an .851 OBP.

Fernander, a 6’3” right handed pitcher in the Tigers’ organisation, has been reassigned to the club’s Double A affiliate the Erie Seawolves.

Fernander began the season with the Seawolves but was assigned to the High A-affiliate, the West Michigan Whitecaps on May 3. He spent six games with the Whitecaps before he was recalled to the Seawolves.

In six appearances with the Whitecaps he pitched nine innings with five strikeouts and gave up four runs with a 1.22 WHIP.

With the Seawolves he has a 1-1 record in seven appearances, nine innings, a 3.0 ERA and nine strikeouts with a 1.56 WHIP.

Fernander spent the previous season with the Connecticut Tigers in the New York-Penn League in the 2019 season.

In 11 appearances with eight starts, he went 2-2 with a 2.31 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 35 innings.

Fernander was selected by the Detroit Tigers organisation in 2018 the 35th round with the 1035th overall pick out of Polk Community College after his sophomore season.
