Former pro boxers Bowe and Pratt celebrate birthdays

FORMER professional boxers David ‘Sugar’ Bowe and Quincy ‘Thrill- A-Minute’ Pratt shared their birthdays together on Thursday before Pratt spent some time in church with his former rival Ray Minus Jr on Sunday.

Pratt, accompanied by “Marvelous’ Marvin Smith, attended a birthday party for Bowe at his Sugar Kid Bowe business on Soldier Road.

“It was a great celebrations,” Pratt said. “It was well attended by his family and patrons of his stores. It’s just so sad that the boxing fraternity didn’t come out and show their support for this man who did so much for boxing, both amateur and professionally.”

Pratt, who celebrated his 52nd birthday, said he just wanted to give Bowe his flowers as he turned 89. He noted that it’s a birthday treat that they both have enjoyed for the past few years and he hopes to continue as long as they have life.

On Sunday, Pratt accompanied Ray Minus Jr at the church service at Mt Tabor for persons who will be inducted into the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture’s National Hall of Fame this month.

Minus Jr, the former Bahamas, British Commonwealth bantamweight and lightweight champion, is one of the inductees.

“It was my first time at Mt Tabor Church, but I can say, Bishop Neil Ellis didn’t hold anything back in saying that athletes should get what they are deserving of,” Pratt said. “He’s from Bimini and talked about Yama Bahama and Gomeo Brennen, who never got the recognition they deserved.

“He’s quite right. But what’s so sad is that the Minister of Sports (Mario Bowleg) didn’t show up and only about five of the athletes being inducted showed up.”

Although they were former sparring partners turned into archrivals, who had three epic pro fights, all won by Minus Jr, Pratt said he continues to support his idol because he needs all of the support that he could in the condition that he’s in right now.
