IF the University of The Bahamas Mingoes season opener is any indication of how strong the team is going to be this season, then the rest of the league should watch out.

The Mingoes cut down The Mambas 82-65 in the first game of The New Providence Basketball Association season Friday night at The Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium.

The game served as The Mingoes homecoming game as well.

Newcomer Dave Lindsay scored 24 points to go along with 13 rebounds to lead the Mingoes in the win. He led all players in both categories.

Tim Grant contributed 11 points and six boards to assist in the win. Erquantae Edgecombe and Justin Burrows dumped in 10 points each as well.

Theodore Grant led all guards with 7 assists and 8 rebounds as well.

Mingoes head coach Bacchus Rolle said he was not only excited with the win but the level of play from the team.

“The guys came out and showed they could play under pressure and that was great,” he said. “For some of these guys this is the first time they have really played organised ball and they really impressed tonight.”

The Mingoes led by as much as 20 during the matchup and was able to capitalise on errors by picking up 17 points off turnovers.

For The Mambas, Leon Bain led the way with 13 points and five rebounds.

Rolle added he was impressed with the team’s patience on the court. “We didn’t get it going right away but we stuck with it and the guys kept their poise and they were able to execute one or two things we were working on. Our guard play was very significant today.”

Rolle singled out forward Justin Burrows in his first game as a Mingoe. “We saw him come in as a big and he really surprised us,” he said. “We didn’t know he could do all that.”

Burrows shot 71 percent (5-7) from the field to pick up his 10 points for The Mingoes.

The Mingoes are expected to head to South Florida next weekend for a two-game tour against Atlantis University in Miami.
