A GIRL was remanded to the Willamae Pratt Centre for Girls yesterday in connection with a series of thefts last month.

The 16-year-old girl appeared before Magistrate Kendra Kelly in the presence of her mother on four charges. These include three counts of stealing and one for receiving.

Around 9pm on August 24, the accused stole Shavano Hanna’s Burgundy coloured 2010 Honda Accord valued at $5,000.

Then on August 28 on Graham Street, the juvenile is accused of stealing $1,100 cash from Kenneth Wilson, Jr.

And on August 30 at Crooked Island Street, the accused is said to have stolen $300 from Maxine Pratt.

In court, the teen pleaded guilty to the vehicle theft resulting in the receiving charge against her being withdrawn. However, she pleaded not guilty to the two remaining charges.

After speaking with the defendant’s mother, Inspector Vernon Pyfrom, who prosecuted, told the magistrate that the youth has been uncontrollable at home.

Her mother said that her daughter frequently leaves the house at night and engages in various illicit activities, including soliciting older men. She tearfully told the court how on those occasions she is fearful for her daughter’s life.

Prosecutor Pyfrom recommended that the accused be given an evaluation and counselling.

In view of this, Magistrate Kelly deferred the juvenile’s sentencing and trial for her outstanding charges to October 25. A probation report was ordered before sentencing is carried out.

The girl will receive counselling while on remand at the Willamae Pratt Centre for Girls.
