Why would killing raccoons be okay?

EDITOR, The Tribune.

It has come to my attention that some people in Abaco and Nassau have decided it is ok to hunt and eat raccoons.

To say that thought is horrific and very inhumane would be an understatement.

With all the land development taking place and deforestation in both islands it is extremely sad to believe we as humans could be so unkind to raccoons as well as other animals that only ask to share in existing together on the planet.

It is bad enough that war, famine and hatred are everywhere, is it really necessary to be so uncaring and destructive to go out and decide today I want to kill some harmless creature for the sport.

Imagine you waking everyday wondering who will come hunt and kill you and your family today, when all you really want to do is provide for your family and survive.

Remember everything thought, action or decision we make has consequences and in the long run it will come back to haunt us.

A Letter to the Editor published in yesterday’s Bahamas Tribune (January 25) erroneously stated that Rentokil Initial poisons and kills raccoons as part of our pest control service. We wish to clearly state that we do not harm raccoons. We do not poison or kill them. We offer a Catch and release service whereby the raccoons are caught without harm and re-located to a non Urban environment out West of the island. (The Eastern side of the island is currently where a population explosion appears to be happening.) Tins of Sardines are used as the bait and no poison of any kind is involved in the process. Our technicians are highly trained and equipped to carry out the job safely without any harm whatsoever to the raccoons. Our process has been reviewed and validated by the Bahamas Humane Society with whom we continue to work closely to carry out our services in an environmentally sustainable manner.

And who are these "people" that are hunting and eating raccoons? Haitians? Raccoons have been here a long time and I've never heard any Bahamian talk about eating them before.

The writer says they are being killed for consumption, how is that any more 'cruel' than killing a chicken/pig/cow/goat/sheep? Perhaps he should add those to his indignant letter and force us all to learn hydroponic farming. This nonsense has got to stop. They are an invasive species, and eternal pest around homes, if someone is consuming them vs wantonly killing for sport, then so be it.

The writer states in one line people are killing them to eat and in another line says people are killing them for sport. So which is it? Humans hunting animals to eat is not sport. When did it become ok to hunt and eat fish? Hunt and eat pigeons, wild pigs etc? This has been ok since humans have been living on this planet. Do you kill rodents living in your house, ants, bugs? Get a reality check and stop letting emotions drive your actions and desire to enforce your emotions on other people. Grow up.

The writer should be glad this ain't a country where dogs and cats could be on the menu. There are countries today that still eat cats and dogs e.g. China, Switzerland, Nigeria, Vietnam, South Korea, and more. So eating raccoons has nothing to do with being inhumane, perhaps they are just hungry and broke.
