TWO men were remanded in custody yesterday after they were accused of being involved in two recent fatal shootings in New Providence.

One of these incidents resulted in the death of a 26-year-old who was shot at a car wash in Chippingham. The other involved the death of a murder suspect gunned down near his car on Boyd Road.

Assistant Chief Magistrate Subusola Swain charged Solomon Williams, 27, with murder.

Williams allegedly shot and killed Leslie Knowles as he stood at his job at Sands Carwash and Auto Detailing near Baldwin Avenue on October 12.

Acting Chief Magistrate Roberto Reckley charged Shaquille Smith, 27, with a separate murder.

Smith and accomplices are accused of gunning down 44-year-old Dennis Basden as he tried to get to his Nissan Cube on Tyler Street off Boyd Road on October 13. The culprits reportedly fled the scene in a Nissan Note.

At the time of his death, Basden was on bail, accused of killing Taraz Hanna in Wilson Tract on June 30, 2015.

One of Smith’s co-accused, Dennis Mather, was charged with the same offence last Friday.

Both accused were told that their cases would be moved to the Supreme Court by a voluntary bill of indictment (VBI). They will be sent to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services until the higher court grants them bail.

Williams’ VBI is set for service on January 29, 2024, while Smith’s VBI is slated for service on January 25, 2024.
